The Holi Festival, also called the Festival of Colors, is a spring festival celebrating the end of the winter season, kind of like the Swedish tradition Valborgsmässoafton. People celebrate by throwing colored powder or water at each other while shouting "Happy Holi!". Everywhere you see people of all ages and backgrounds completely smothered with paint.
We had gotten tickets to a Holi Cow celebration a little bit outside of town. Equipped with water bazookas and non-sensitive clothes we embarked on the adventure to get a cab.
On the side of the road, we see a little boy giggling with alternating looks at us and at a point across the street, and I start to suspect we may be under attack. All of a sudden two boys comes running at us with water balloons. One of the boys makes a perfect strike that hits Kristina's neck full on, and then runs of cheering and making victory signs to his buddies.
Fifty meters later, we are approaching a group of about 10 Indian men, whose eyes light up when they see us and I definitely know we are in serious trouble. Five minutes later we enter a cab looking like Shrek’s older sisters. I was starting to realize what was about to come...
The Holi Cow festival was a big outdoor party with lots of people and bands playing. People were mingling around, drinking, throwing paint at each other, dancing, shooting at each other with water guns and jumping in and out of the two pools (one filled with foam and one with mud water). Totally crazy and fun! I luckily managed to stay clear of the mud pool, but my belly and neck are still green after three showers...
Amazing. Thought the New Guinean people had the strangest festivities. We were so wrong. Good to see that you are having a gr8 time. You deserve it.
